Programme Audience and Overview
The FETAC Level 5 Certificate in IT is a part-time two year further education training programme. The programme is designed to provide a general introduction to the area of Information Communications Technology, and to serve as a pre-higher education programme to college or university. No previous experience or knowledge is required to be accepted for this course.
Programme Aims and Objectives
The overall aim of this programme leading to the award of FETAC Level 5 Certificate in IT, is to provide its learners with the necessary theoretical and practical skills, knowledge and competence, to gain a comprehensive introductory foundation and understanding of the main subject areas and schools of thought within the area of Information Technology.
The achievement of this aim requires that the following programme learning outcomes are met:
- To provide learners with a strong introduction and foundation base within the broad area of Computing and Information Technology, from which further academic study can be undertaken at a higher NQAI level, across a range of subjects. Acquire a broad range of industry-relevant knowledge, skills and competence in the field of Information Communications Technology.
- Manage academic studies in an effective manner
- Conduct work experience relevant and related to the area of Computing and IT
- Use a range of common software applications to support studies
- Acquire a thorough grounding in the follows streams / disciplines of IT: Networking and Network Systems, Communications, Web Design and Development, Computer Programming, and Database Methods.
- Demonstrate practical competencies in the area of Information Technology.
- To develop the ability of the learners to be logical and creative in their problem solving approach
- A key outcome of the programme is to produce graduates who can work effectively as individuals, in teams and in multidisciplinary settings by recognising the need to communicate effectively with individuals from a wide variety of areas with the industry.

Assessment
CCT will utilise a variety of assessment methods to help ensure that the learning outcomes of each subject will be achieved, for example: Written Examination compiled of long or short term essays, Objective Tests, Presentations, Group Projects, Practical Assignments, Oral Examinations and so on. Assessment will be continuous throughout each module, with final examinations administered in most of the modules.
Academic Progression Opportunities
Successful graduates of the FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Information Technology, will be eligible to progress directly onto the HETAC Level 6 Higher Certificate in Science in Computing in Information Technology at CCT, and will be considered for other Level 6 graduate progression opportunities in Ireland.
